With the Super Bowl coming up, football fans are finalizing their plans to watch the game and picking out their favorite spots to catch the game There are so many great and famous bars in New York City but this year, one of the city’s most valuable bars will be closing: Washington Heights bar, Coogan’s, will be closing and this year will be the last time the Super Bowl will be played..
Coogan’s has been open since 1985 and it’s been a haven to many sports fans for the first Sunday in February each year. Unfortunately, this year the Coogan’s lease was updated and they were told they’d be charged $40,000 more per month. That’s a large increase for a bar pub like Coogan’s in the city. It’s aesthetic is very sports centered and cozy, and the environment is the perfect place to take a load off after work or watch a football game.
That’s been a popular Washington Heights tradition that brings all the nearby hospital employees and their friends out to celebrate and have the best Super Bowl party. The best cozy place to have a dinner, watch a sports game, or enjoy a beverage after work would be across the street from your job right? That’s what made Coogan’s perfect in Washington Heights. The landlord of the bar and restaurant is New York Presbyterian so it was a home to everyone in the community. Even partners stated, “Please note that Coogan’s always put the community first as we will miss it tremendously” because of the great traditions the restaurant kept up.
It is very unfortunate that New York City is losing its precious Washington Heights ba;r however there are so many other exciting bars near the Pier 62 Carousel. The Pier 62 Carousel is located at Chelsea Piers and some of the best Super Bowl traditions could be made there, too. The Park is on 17th street and 10th avenue, and the aesthetic there is definitely sports bar friendly. The Westside Tavern is also a cool and cozy sports bar right across the street from Pier 62 and this one even has a pool table and karaoke bar, which means it’s definitely Super Bowl party friendly. That’d be the perfect new home for sports fans to spend their time for all the big games! The Chelsea area is the perfect area for sports fans to make a new restaurant and bar the community home. A place to watch all the sports games and enjoy a party, have cozy family dinners, or to relax after a long day of New York City fun.
Everyone will be enjoying their last time to watch the Super Bowl at Coogan’s in Washington Heights but let's look forward to making a new home near our Pier 62 Carousel. This way we can have a family restaurant for families leaving the carousel and activities at the pier as well. A new home for NBA playoffs and championship game gatherings, Super Bowl parties, and family dinners and gatherings.
