A Muller Blast From The Past

Have you guys ever really looked at the animals on the Forest Park Carousel and wonder who came up with such a great concept? The carousel became a historical landmark in New York City in 2013 so it’s clear that it’s been there for a long time. Not only does it have a legacy surrounding it, but it’s also placed in one of the prettiest parks in New York City. Forest Park Carousel is a historic carousel located in Forest Park in the Woodhaven section of the New York City borough of Queens. It was built in 1903 and moved to its present site in 1972 from Dracut, Massachusetts, after the previous carousel was destroyed by fire in 1966. The carousel was built by the great Carl Muller of the D.C. Muller Brothers. He didn’t just come up with an amazing concept, but he hand crafted each horse and animal on the carousel, giving it a truly unique beauty no one could resist.

Carl Muller started carving when he was just a child working with his brother and his father. When his father passed, he attended Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where he received his formal training. Daniel Muller’s realism, artistic drama, and incredible attention to fine detail led to him create some of the finest carousel horses ever carved in history. By 1903, Carl Muller and his brother had their own business, and by 1910 they had already designed multiple beautiful carousels throughout the world!

Though the Forest Park Carousel actually started out in Massachusetts before moving to NYC, it’s a valued part of the park landscape. Forest Park’s carousel is one of two Muller carousels still standing because the rest were destroyed during the Great Depression and Civil War. Although the carousels were destroyed, the carvings were sold separately, symbolizing how talented Carl Muller was. People were destroying things but valued his detailed carvings and now we have our beautiful New York City landmark because of his talent and hard work!

The Forest Park Carousel is definitely a gem in the city because of the infamous Muller carousel. As you plan to make your spring and summer visits there, be sure to appreciate the beauty of Carl Muller as you prepare to ride and become a part of its long-standing, treasured history!
